Richard Wright is a prominent African American author who wrote this classic novel in 1940. He tells the story of Bigger Thomas, a 20 year old African American living in the 1930’s ghetto on the South Side of Chicago. Bigger kills a white woman by accident and then kills his girlfriend before finally getting caught by the police.

In Barack Obama’s bestselling memoir “Dreams From My Father,” he acknowledges and addresses the influence Richard Wright had not only on him, but on the the South Side of Chicago.
